PR and My Mom’s Words of Wisdom

February 12, 2009 at the crack of dawn a small  Auburn University Tiger Transit  bus embarked on a 2 hour drive to the PRSA Student Summit in Birmingham. Aboard the small bus 10, wide-eyed public relations novices were eager to start the day. We all knew we would be listening to speakers and doing workshops but we had no idea how useful any of it would be.

Personally, I soaked in everything. There’s an old Spanish saying my mother recited to me almost weekly for the past 22 years of my life, it says ‘he that lives by the advice/experiences of others dies at an old age.’ My mother truly believes that seeking advice from someone wiser is the best way to avoid foolish decisions that may result in hardships. I guess I internalized the saying because I doted on every word the speakers said. I fervently wrote in my notebook any piece of advice they offered. They answered questions like, ‘What I wish I had known at the beginning of my career’ and ‘where I started my career?’ They answered many questions I had like, graduate school vs. beginning my career and which is better for me, nonprofit work vs. agency work? It was all very insightful and I believe the immeasurable advice will help me in the all too near future.

New Facebook, good PR

Upon signing on to Facebook this morning this letter opened up. I said to my friend whom was reading it out loud, “this is a great personalized message tool!” Unfortunately, my friend is not familiar with the term, as she is a psychology major, but she responded, “I think Facebook does a good job at communication with its users.” And I absolutely agree, facebook is the new postal service of America keeping thousand in touch. Below is the letter from Mark Zuckerberg, creator if facebook.

Hey -

At Facebook, our goal is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. More than 90 million people across the world have joined this movement and are using the site to communicate and share information with the people they care about most. Today, we’re happy to invite you to check out the next evolution of our product. We’ve been working on it for a while, so we’re really excited to show it to you.

We had three goals to improve Facebook in this version. First, we wanted to make everything clean and simple to use. Reducing clutter makes it easier for you to find what you’re looking for and share information with others. Second, we wanted to give you more control over your profile. Everyone should be able to express themselves how they want, which means privacy controls and control over how content appears on your profile. Lastly, we wanted to show the most recent and relevant content. People share so much on Facebook that it’s easier to keep up with your friends by focusing on the newest and most important information.

You may have seen the preview Page we created a few months ago to get suggestions from the community on the changes we were thinking about making. I want to thank all of you who wrote in and gave us feedback. It’s always great to hear from people using our products all around the world. As you use the new Facebook, please feel free to let us know what you think using the “Send Feedback” link at the top of new pages.

To try out the new Facebook, look for a banner at the top of every page. If you get lost, there are help links available as well as the option to switch back to the older version for a little while. I hope you enjoy this next evolution of the site as much as we do.

Mark Zuckerberg

Closing Time for Auburn Summer School

The end of the summer semester is creeping closer. The hustle and bustle of the freshmen and returning students in ringing in the air. Cars and Uhauls are crowding the streets but where to? I have almost been hit by two cars in the past 12 hours. They quickly lower their windows and wave mouthing “I’m SO SORRY!” Well fortunately I don’t suffer from road rage, so I wave it off, but the dangers that are on the road are as many as the students entering my neighborhood once again.

I have had a completely peaceful summer. Conserving gas, trying to make the only time I drive somewhere I really need to be like work. I have avoided car accidents and tickets. But now at the close of the semester I can’t fin parking in my apartment complex. The parking lot where I park and wait for my bus is back now too. How is this possible? I’m not yet finished with my classes but I am being pushed around by lost freshmen and their even more lost, parents. Parking services need to send out more information to these parents. E-mails to new students. Signs should be placed everywhere, all over campus to avoid this madness and potential dangers car situations. This issue should be looked at now, they should come up with a solution so that next summer the end can be just as sweet as the beginning of summer!

2 Thumbs Up for The Knox Family?

This morning the family of Amanda Knox (21-year-old American under arrest in an Italian jail for the alleged murder of Meredith Kercher in 2007) were on the Today Show. Meredith Viera gave them a walk-in-the park interview asking questions of their feelings and ’surreal’ experience of the event up till now. They answered all the questions mildly appearing calm and somewhat happy with they way things are going. Her mother said their attorneys are somewhat confident with the situation because of a lack of evidence.

I saw straight threw it.

Nothing important was addressed. Yeah the today show is always a good opportunity to get positive exposure but the question is can you nail it? because if you can’t your better off staying as far away from the mass media as possible. In your attempt to get some good press out there about your issue, the interview with TOP news networks has to be impeccable. One interview that comes to mind is Barbra Walter’s interviewing Martha Stewart. Martha, Martha you shouldn’t wear multi-carat diamond earrings when trying to appear humble and down-to-earth. Small details can help or harm the image you are trying to portray and the Knox family’s calm demenor didn’t convince me that their daughter is innocent.

You You Like Some Witiness With Those Peanuts?

I have long understood Southwest to be the airlines full of fun and laughter but is Delta adopting a new technique, one that leave the client with a smile one their face and a secret plea for more?
My airline of chose for a trip I made this weekend was Delta. Not because they have superb service or reliable departure times, but because its the only airlines that had non-stop flights home. I was pleasantly surprised at some of the new accommodations they have made. Now there are more ticket kiosks and fewer receptionist to answer my questions. However, when my kiosk refused to cooperate with my credit card in a frustrated frazzle I went against the grain (and the attendant that kept directing me to the machine) and got matters taken care of my a receptionist at the Delta ticketing counter. Just as the relief set in that I just might make my flight, she makes a joke- touchdown Delta! Not only was I laughing but now I was in a pleasant mood. As I passed security and made my way to the gate I couldn’t help but wonder if possibly a little bit of Southwest had rubbed off on strictly-business Delta?
Throughout the flight the attendants were serving witty remarks and offering clever banter at every opportunity. It was all too fun for what I usually experience with them. It had been a while since I last traveled with Delta so there is no telling how long they have been playing the funny card. However long it has been it worked. Whether they have been changing their consumer relations techniques to a slightly more entertaining approach, or I stumbled across a new reality show on the lives of wittiest people in the air- I know not yet. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

New Student Center, Auburn University

The new student center will be open for use august 18th, the first day of the fall semester. Dr. Jonny Green, our dean of students, sent an e-mail out this past weekend. It was a fantastic personalized message tool- informative, brief and upbeat.

The much anticipated Student Center will have better dinning, more space for study, and it is in a very central area of campus. Dr.Green’s e-mail could not have come at a bette time, students are beinning to get restless.

He explained how there will be a celebration for its grand opening. There will be live music and entertainment from other campus organiztions like the cheerleaders and band. This celebration will be homecomming week (November 5.)

Once again, Dr.Green invites all students to meet him, but this time in his new office in the New Student Center. Green always makes time for his students. He is active with the students and we are all fortunate to have a dean that is so involed in our affairs on campus.

Benjy Davis Project in Auburn 6/28/08

One of the most fantastic performances without a doubt. The Benjy Davis Project played in the back room at The Sky Bar Cafe, Saturday night.

The band played with passion and gusto everyone in the room couldn’t help but move to the beat. The energy flowed from wall to wall. Drenched in sweat their music was played from the soul.

The fans danced while they played their instruments as if it were their final hour. Louisana natives the Benjy Davis Projects has played at Auburn several times in the past few years.

The music was heartfelt and I am glad I could have experienced such musicianship. Check out their site http://www.bdpmusic.com/

Auburn University SGA Blood Drives

Auburn University Student Government Association has consistent blood drives several times a year. This summer Director of Blood Drives, Amy Stone, organized and executed a Blood Drive in the Foy Ballroom. It the last Blood Drive in this building because starting in the fall they will be in the New Student Union. Stone organized several blood drives in the spring some reashing 200 participants. She expects at least 300 in the fall. This summer the goal was 50 and they were well over their quota. According to Stone our area has a shortage of blood donations, therefore every participant is very important. The blood drives are advertised throughout campus several weeks prior to the event. Donations of food and drinks are made by local businesses. Appointments can be made in order to shorten the wait time. Participants simply registered then they would meet with an American Red Cross representative and asked several important questions to determine if they qualify to donate. If an appointment is made the whole process can take slightly under an hour. An hour well worth it because just one pint of blood from a donator can save 2 lives.

Auburn University Students for Life

Auburn Students for Life is the pro-Life organization on campus.

Drew Eden is currently serving as president. We interviewed him to learn more about this club.

The club has been on campus for 3 years but is in provisional status. In those three years drew explained how they have accomplished much already.

The club has prominent speakers from the pro-life community come and speak to the members and anyone else that wishes to come. Along with the speakers the club puts on Diaper drives where some members set a table outside of Wal-Mart and ask for donations of diapers and other items new monthers can use.

Eden said this years goal is to inspire people to move, he explains how most of the students on campus have an apathetic attitude towards the topic. The club will set up a table on the concoarse at ‘O Days’ in August. Eden encourages anyone to visit if they would like to get involved.

Yarborough Tennis- Mixer

Yarborough Tennis Center had a tennis-mixer Friday June 6th. We interviewed David Hume the tennis pro for the center in order to get more information about the event.

The tennis center also has a league. With a one time league fee anyone is welcome to join. The center has tennis instructors and other events to help anyone in the community improve their tennis skills.

Tennis mixers are the first Friday of every month. They start at 6:30 and can be moved inside in case of rain. There is a $5 court fee assessed.

The level of experience doesn’t matter. Participants show up and get paired up with someone close to their experience level.

If there are any questions about the Yarborough Tennis Center, the tennis-mixer or any other questions please call the center at (334)501-2920.
